The Stand Out Features You Need to Know
- The 18th century Gatehouse was built at the same time as the new wing was added to the castle. It boasts oak panelling balustrades along with a dramatic hand printed wallpaper on an antique gold ground and carpet runner on a deep walnut floor.
- Stronghold of the Catharts–There are exceptional traditional features throughout the Castle including the turrets with gun and arrow holes, a dungeon in the basement and a machicolation on the fifth floor directly above the front door from which boiling oil, boiling water or hot sand was dumped on unwanted guests attempting to enter the front door!
- The outstanding ceiling mural was created by an Italian artist from Florence and it depicts the battle of Killochan.
- The Great Hall–By far the most impressive and largest room here and Killochan Castle, the majestically decorated Great Hall with elaborate art. Graced with antique furniture and original fireplace above which rests the coat of arms for Cathcart of Carleton. The impressive chandelier is over 2 metres in length. This vast and spacious room would not be out of place in any European palace, with dimensions of 11.1m x 5.9m and a ceiling height of 4.5 metres. In the Great Hall Room you will find access to a further two turret staircases, the service staircase and the secret staircase leading you to one of the master bedrooms above.
Meetings And Events
Accommodating parties as small as 10 and as large as 60, whilst the castle has grandness, it also provides comfort and tranquillity for those wanting to escape and live in the magical atmosphere that this castle provides.
This suite has been decorated and refurbished to a very high standard and comes with a spacious en-suite bathroom. Its antique furniture and paintings give the room an ancient charm enhancing this with the secret door that leads onto the second castle turret and the service staircase leading down to the drawing room and onto the lower levels of the castle to the Private Room. A beautifully presented fireplace sits centre of the wall and two large case and sash windows ensure the room is flooded with natural light.
The Great Hall
The impressive and spacious Great Hall is the heart of the castle.
Graced with antique furniture, artwork depicting historical scenes and events associated with the castle, a restored original grand fireplace, above which sits the Cathcart of Carleton coat of arms, a nod to the original family owners. The impressive chandelier is over 2 metres in length.
Killochan Castle is a sensational location and venue for productions and we welcome everything from international drama TV series and Hollywood feature films. Scotland has been inspiring filmmakers for about as long as the moving image has been captured.
Modern films made in Scotland such as Highlander, Trainspotting, James Bond’s Skyfall, and The Wicker Man have all featured Scottish locales as a character in its own right rather than just a pretty backdrop and it’s no wonder.
